8 Essential Tips for New Real Estate Agents

Are you a brand-new real estate agent wondering how to jump-start your business? Or maybe you've been in the industry for a little while but feel like you're not gaining traction? If so, you're in the right place! Today, I’m sharing the eight key tips I wish I had known when I first started 16 years ago.

1. Get Your Real Estate License

This might seem obvious, but the first step is getting your license! Each state has different requirements, so do your research. Simply search online for the pre-licensing requirements in your state. Some states, like Utah, even offer free pre-licensing courses. Once you've completed your coursework, take and pass your state exam to become a licensed agent.

2. Choose the Right Brokerage

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing the right brokerage. Many new agents don’t realize how crucial this is. I initially joined a small boutique brokerage because my husband did their taxes and recommended them. While they were great people, I lacked the hands-on training I needed. Look for a brokerage that offers mentorship, tools, technology, and support to help you grow your business. Surround yourself with agents who are running successful businesses in the way you want to operate.

3. Consider Joining a Team

If you’re looking for mentorship and want to learn the business quickly, joining a real estate team could be a great option. While you may have to split commissions, you’ll gain valuable experience, training, and potential leads. Teams can help you get hands-on practice with transactions, marketing, and client interactions.

4. Leverage Social Media

In today’s digital world, social media is one of the best tools for real estate agents. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube allow you to connect with potential clients, showcase your listings, and build your brand. Posting consistently and engaging with your audience will help establish credibility and attract leads.

5. Start Building Your Database

Your network is your net worth. Begin compiling a database of potential clients, past contacts, family, and friends. Use a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system to keep track of leads and follow up consistently. Relationships are key in real estate, and staying in touch with your contacts can lead to future business.

6. Focus on Lead Generation

Real estate is a business of relationships, but it’s also a numbers game. Whether it’s through open houses, social media, networking events, or referrals, make lead generation a daily habit. The more people you connect with, the more opportunities you’ll create.

7. Invest in Yourself and Your Education

The learning never stops in real estate! Attend training sessions, take online courses, read books, and stay up to date on market trends. Continuous learning will give you a competitive edge and help you refine your skills.

8. Be Patient and Stay Consistent

Success in real estate doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and consistency. Stay committed to your daily tasks, show up for your business every day, and don’t get discouraged if things take a little while to pick up. The agents who succeed are the ones who stay consistent and keep pushing forward.
