Real Estate Work-Life Balance: Thrive Without Weekend Hustle!

Where are my moms at? Yes, I’m talking to you—the moms who are either considering getting their real estate license or already have one but are struggling to find balance between business and family life.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from moms just like you, asking, “Mariah, I want to get into real estate, but I don’t want to work every night and weekend. I want to be present for my kids’ activities, but I also want to build a business of my own.”

Good news: It IS possible to have both! I’ve built a six-figure real estate business while keeping my nights and weekends mostly free—and I’m here to show you how you can do it too.

My Journey: From Teaching to Real Estate

Before I got into real estate, I was a teacher. I earned a master’s degree in education and loved the idea of having summers, weekends, and school breaks off with my kids. But what I didn’t anticipate were the early morning staff meetings, late-night back-to-school events, grading papers at home, and extra trainings. I quickly realized that teaching didn’t give me the flexibility I truly wanted.

That’s when I turned to real estate. At first, I had the same concerns many of you do—how would I manage showings, open houses, and client meetings without sacrificing time with my kids? But over time, I figured out a system that allows me to be both a present mom and a successful real estate agent.

The Key to Balance: Setting Boundaries

One of the most important things I did was set clear boundaries for my business. Here’s how:

  1. Control Your Schedule When scheduling meetings, I offer availability only during school hours. For example, I’ll tell clients, “I’m available Monday between 10 AM and 1:30 PM.” Most of the time, they’ll pick a time within that range. If not, I offer another time that still aligns with my schedule. Clients will respect the boundaries you set.

  2. Leverage Other Agents for Open Houses If you don’t want to spend your weekends sitting in open houses, let other agents host them for you! Many newer agents or those looking for extra opportunities would love to help. I also limit my own open houses to just two hours, rather than committing to long six-hour sessions.

  3. Plan Around Family Events I schedule open houses around my kids’ activities. If there’s a soccer game at noon, I’ll hold an open house from 9:30 to 11:30. If their game is earlier, I’ll do the open house from 1 to 3. It’s all about making your business fit around your life, not the other way around.

  4. Be Confident in Your Boundaries You don’t need to explain to clients why you’re not available at a certain time. Simply say, “I’d love to meet at this time. Does that work for you?” If not, offer another option. Clients respect agents who value their time and have a structured schedule.

You Can Build a Thriving Business on Your Own Terms

Being a successful real estate agent doesn’t mean sacrificing nights, weekends, or family time. By setting boundaries, leveraging resources, and taking control of your schedule, you can build a profitable business that works for you.
