How to Start a YouTube Channel from Scratch (Step-by-Step for Realtors & Locals Alike!)

If you’ve ever thought about starting your own YouTube channel — whether you're a real estate pro like me or just passionate about showcasing your city — this post is for YOU. I’m walking you through step by step how to launch your channel completely from scratch.

Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Set Up Your Channel

Once you’re logged into YouTube, head to the left-hand menu and scroll all the way down until you see Customization — click that.

Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Layout tab: You won’t need a channel trailer just yet since you’re starting fresh.

  • Let’s move on to the fun part — Branding.

Step 2: Add Your Branding

In the Branding tab, you’ll upload:

  • A profile picture

  • A channel banner

  • A video watermark

Pro Tip: Have your images ready to go. I had mine prepped ahead of time so I could just drag and drop.

Once everything is uploaded, make sure you hit Publish to save it all.

Step 3: Add Basic Info

Click over to the Basic Info tab. This is where the real identity of your channel starts to form:

  1. Channel Name – Think about your niche. I chose San Diego Living, but yours could be “Moving to Sacramento” or “Life in Nashville” — whatever fits your market.

  2. Handle – This is unique, meaning no one else can have the same one. If your first choice is taken, try a variation that still represents you.

  3. Description – Add a compelling blurb about what your channel offers and who it's for. Make it location-specific and value-packed.

  4. Contact Info – Make it easy for people to reach out to you.

  5. Channel Links – This is where you can link to your:

    • Website

    • Instagram

    • Facebook or other relevant platforms

Again, don’t forget to publish/save everything before exiting this section.

Step 4: Double-Check Everything

Once you've published all your branding and info, head back to double-check:

  • Is your banner showing?

  • Is your contact info accurate?

  • Are your links clickable?

You're officially on your way to building an audience and growing your presence online.
