Elevate Your Real Estate Business This Year: My 6-Step Goal Planning Guide
If you’re ready to elevate your real estate business and take things to the next level this year, you’re in the right place.
Whether you’re reading this at the start of the year, halfway through, or even before the year begins, it’s never too early or too late to set your game plan. Today, I’m sharing the exact goal-planning steps I use in my own business — and that many agents on my national team use each year — to set ourselves up for success.
Let’s dive in!
1. Figure Out Your WHY
This is your foundation.
Why are you in this business? Why are you willing to put in the hours, effort, and challenges that come with real estate?
Your why gives you purpose, focus, and the motivation to keep showing up — even on the days you don’t feel like it.
Some common whys I see among agents:
You love the real estate industry.
You’re chasing financial freedom.
You have a passion for helping people, whether that’s finding their dream home or guiding them through relocation.
You love educating and empowering your clients.
Once you know your why, you can use it as a checkpoint every time you hit resistance or burnout. It keeps your eyes on the prize.
2. Set Your Commitments
Your why is the big-picture driver, but your commitments are the daily actions that push you forward.
Ask yourself:
What are you committing to so you can achieve your why?
Will you get up early and follow a miracle morning routine?
Are you committed to staying healthy and strong so you can bring your best self to your business?
Are you willing to do uncomfortable things that push you out of your comfort zone for long-term growth?
Stay true to those commitments. That’s where the real growth happens.
3. Incorporate Affirmations
I know, some people roll their eyes at affirmations — but hear me out.
When you fill your mind with positive, intentional statements, you start to shift your mindset, even if you don’t believe them fully at first. Over time, you internalize them.
Try affirmations like:
I am good enough.
I do enough and have enough.
I am strong and committed.
I wake up grateful and go to sleep with joy.
Write them, read them, say them out loud — they work.
4. Do Goal Planning (Short + Long Term)
Break your goals into personal, professional, and financial buckets.
For each bucket, set:
Short-term goals: things you can work on right now.
Long-term goals: things that will compound over time but require consistency.
Then, break each goal down into three clear steps with specific action items for each step.
Example: Want to start a YouTube channel?
Step 1: Research how to start one (watch creators, read books, take notes).
Step 2: Plan your content list.
Step 3: Learn the technical side — how to upload, edit, and promote.
Big goals become achievable when you break them down.
5. Use a Financial Tracker
Track everything.
We use Mint.com (not sponsored) to track personal and business expenses — housing, marketing, software, everything.
You should know:
What you’re spending.
When you’re spending it.
What results (if any) you’re getting from that spending.
This helps you audit your business later:
→ Is that marketing expense paying off?
→ Are there areas where you’re wasting money?
→ Where should you double down for the best ROI?
6. Track Your GCI (Gross Commission Income)
This one’s fun!
Every year, I map out how much GCI I want to make — and I do this 2–3 months ahead of the new year so I can hit the ground running.
Start by setting a realistic GCI goal, and then break it down:
How many transactions will it take?
What’s your average commission per sale?
How many leads and appointments do you need to hit those sales?
Once you have clarity, you can reverse-engineer your entire year.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re a brand-new agent or a seasoned pro, you can elevate your real estate business at any point in the year — but it starts with a plan.
Remember:
✔ Know your why.
✔ Set your commitments.
✔ Use affirmations to train your mindset.
✔ Break goals into actionable steps.
✔ Track your finances closely.
✔ Watch your GCI like a hawk.
