How to Build a Thriving Real Estate Business as a Mom
Are you a real estate agent and a mom? If so, I have some advice for you—advice I wish I had received when I first got my real estate license while raising kids. Balancing family life and a thriving real estate business can be challenging, but it’s absolutely possible. Here are six key lessons I’ve learned along the way that will help you grow your business your way while being the amazing parent you are.
1. Keep Doing What You Love
As parents, it’s easy to let go of personal passions when life gets busy. I get it—I almost gave up soccer, a sport I’ve loved my whole life, after having kids. But my husband asked me, Why? And he was right.
Staying involved in the activities you enjoy not only keeps you balanced but also leads to business opportunities. I’ve gained real estate clients from playing soccer, meeting people at pickleball games, and simply staying engaged in my community. People love working with those they already know, like, and trust—so keep doing what you love!
2. Build Your Business Your Way
When I started in real estate over 16 years ago, the "old school" methods were cold calling, door knocking, and mailing flyers. But those tactics never felt right to me.
I chose to build my business around my sphere, my community, and—eventually—social media. And guess what? It worked! If you love cold calling, go for it! But if you’d rather leverage social media and referrals, that’s perfectly fine too. Build your business in a way that aligns with your strengths and comfort level. You are the boss—so run your business on your terms.
3. Set Boundaries and Own Your Schedule
One of the biggest struggles for real estate moms? Feeling like you have to be available all the time. But here’s the secret: you control your schedule.
If school pickup is at 2:30, don’t schedule anything during that time. If a client asks to tour a home at 3:00, you don’t have to say, Sorry, I’m picking up my kids. Instead, say, I have an appointment at that time, but I’m available at X or Y time. Your personal time is just as important as your work appointments. Protect it.
4. Have a Game Plan (and Reverse Engineer It)
Many agents run on autopilot, taking on every client without a clear income or time goal. Instead, figure out exactly what you want:
How much do you want to earn?
How many homes do you need to sell to reach that goal?
How many hours do you realistically want to work each week?
Do you want to be at every soccer game, school drop-off, or recital?
Once you know these answers, reverse engineer your business strategy to align with your goals. Without a clear plan, you’re just throwing darts in the dark.
5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Other Agents
When we moved into a new neighborhood, I immediately felt intimidated by the big-name agents already dominating the area. They hosted massive community events, sent out mailers, and had years of brand recognition. My first instinct? How can I compete with that?
But here’s the truth: not everyone wants to work with the “big fish.” People will choose you because they connect with you. If you show up authentically, the right clients will find you. Focus on your strengths and ignore the noise.
6. You Are Enough
It’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough—especially when you see other agents seemingly doing it all. But here’s the reality: you don’t have to do everything. You just have to do what works for you.
Some agents send newsletters. Others throw client events. Some focus entirely on social media. Your business is yours to build, and whatever you’re doing—it’s enough.
Final Thoughts
Being a real estate agent and a mom isn’t always easy, but it’s 100% possible to thrive in both roles. Stay true to yourself, set boundaries, and build a business that fits your lifestyle. You’ve got this!
