Being a Mother in Real Estate: 4 Things I Wish I Had Known
When I started my real estate journey 17 years ago, I had no idea what was ahead. Then, 12 years ago, I became a mother, and the balancing act of being a parent and a real estate agent truly began. I had so many misconceptions about what it would take to be successful in this industry while also being present for my family.
Now, with years of experience under my belt, I want to share the four things I wish I had known earlier—especially for any moms considering a career in real estate. Let’s dive in!
1. You Don’t Have to Work Nights & Weekends to Succeed
One of the biggest fears I had when I started was that I’d have to sacrifice all my nights and weekends to make it in real estate. I thought I’d miss out on family dinners, soccer games, and bedtime stories. But let me tell you—I call baloney on that myth!
You do not have to work all hours to be successful. What you do need is a plan. Time management and setting boundaries are key. Having a structured schedule that prioritizes income-generating activities—whether that’s social media, referrals, or outreach—allows you to run a thriving business without missing out on family time.
If you’re struggling with time management, I’ve got a daily schedule template that includes everything from my morning routine to driving carpool, client meetings, and content creation. Drop a comment below or reach out, and I’ll send it to you!
2. Flexibility is Your Superpower
As moms, we’re already experts at being flexible. One minute, we’re making lunch, and the next, we’re rearranging plans because gymnastics got canceled. The same goes for real estate.
Appointments will shift. Clients will have last-minute changes. Home tours may fall through. The ability to pivot and adjust is a game-changer.
But here’s the best part—real estate gives you flexibility. If your kid gets sick at school, you can go pick them up. If you need to adjust your schedule to make it to a school event, you can. Flexibility is one of the main reasons I pursued real estate, and it’s something I cherish every day.
3. Your Network is Your Net Worth
We’ve all heard the saying: Your network is your net worth. And it couldn’t be more true in real estate. If you’re struggling to get business, chances are, you need to grow your network.
The good news? There are so many ways to do this. Whether it’s through social media, community events, networking groups, or simply engaging with your sphere of influence, expanding your network opens up doors you never even knew existed.
Personally, a huge portion of my business comes from referrals—both from past clients and real estate agents in different states who trust me with their people. If you’re looking for a supportive network of real estate professionals to help grow your business, reach out to me. I’m part of an incredible group that has truly changed my career.
4. You Can Be a Present Mom AND a Thriving Agent
For so long, I thought I had to choose—either be fully present as a mom or be a successful real estate agent. But I’m here to tell you, you can have both.
It all comes down to strategy and intention.
Set clear working hours and communicate them to clients.
Automate what you can (hello, social media scheduling and email templates!).
Delegate when possible—whether that’s hiring an assistant or outsourcing tasks that drain your time.
And most importantly, give yourself grace. Some days, you’ll crush it in business. Other days, you’ll crush it as a mom. And that’s okay!
Final Thoughts
If you’re a mom thinking about getting into real estate, or you’re already in the industry and struggling to balance it all—know this: It’s possible. You don’t have to work 24/7. You don’t have to sacrifice your family. You just need the right approach, support, and systems in place.
I hope this helps encourage any moms out there navigating the real estate world. If you want more insights, need a copy of my daily schedule, or just want to connect—reach out anytime. I’d love to chat!
